Gardening in the Springtime

Gardening tools and spring flowers in the garden

Nature says hello in the most beautiful way through spring. It is much more lovely and gentle and always seems to lift our spirits – it is as if it is daring you to stay gloomy, but can’t. The new white and pink flowers populating the trees and the fresh spring lilies and grass crowding out the dead undergrowth provide a sightly scene that only makes you more appreciative of your eyes.

You can bring these marvels and beauties of nature close by growing spring flowers in your garden – yes you can?

Choosing Spring Flowers

When it comes to picking flowers for your garden, always choose the native varieties as opposed to non-natives according to Michelle’s website. Of course, the natives are adapted to your local environment and have a better chance of thriving – your local nursery will provide you with a list of them.

If you are the ornamental kind of person, you are better off with perennials than annuals. Perennials will not demand an arm and leg in terms of maintenance and will not need replanting now and then. An excellent example of perennials includes red hot pokers, bear’s breeches, and poppies – the perennial varieties, of course.

Some Flowers you Can Grow during Spring

  1. Dicentra spectabilis or the Bleeding Heart

Although this plant is a spring ephemeral, it has some of the best-looking flowers and leaves during spring – this is in spite of the awful connotation.  However, their magnificence will wear off as summer bares its teeth. It will start to turn yellow and may even disappear entirely but that shouldn’t discourage you in any way. Just make sure you have other plants that will fill the void left.

The bleeding heart loves a well-drained, fertile and moist soil – quite the proud variety. They also need a partial shade – direct sunlight may cause them to bleed, literally.

  1. Creeping Phlox

This is perennial has a robust appeal and creates a magnificent ground cover. The sea of the flowering phlox is so refreshing that it will make passers-by stop and admire. They will without a doubt leave everyone that comes across them with a broad smile on their face. However, what you are left with when the flowers fade is evergreen foliage – not too terrible.

This creeping variety can take any growing condition as long as it gets a sufficient amount of water – the soil quality does not matter. The creeping phlox will not mind the full sun, but shades are not too shabby either.

Spring flowers like many others are appealing and elegant. Many also produce a fragrant smell which you’ll find draws you in too. If you’re a gardener preparing for the season, hopefully, this information will prove beneficial to you and you can avoid gardening problems.
